Schedule of Events:

  • 9:00 am – Half marathon starts @ the Fort Dodge Aquatic Center   (1111 N 32nd St, Fort Dodge, IA 50501)
  • 9:30 am – 5K walk/run starts @ Kennedy Park
  • 11:30 am – Awards @ Kennedy Park (near finish line, weather permitting)
  • 12:00 noon – Kid’s Fun Run Events @ Kennedy Park

Kid’s Fun Run times are approximate.  First race will start promptly at noon and each race will follow immediately after.

  • 12:00 noon – Kids ½ mile fun run ages 9-12 yo
  • 12:05 pm – Kids ¼ mile fun run ages 6-8 yo
  • 12:10 pm – Kids 1/8 mile fun run ages 4-5 yo
  • 12:15 pm – Kids 100 meter fun run ages 1-3 yo

What are the Entry Fees?

What is the course for the half marathon and 5K?

Half marathon route:  The half marathon route take advantage of the Fort Dodge trail system, almost exclusively.  Where our trail system does not connect and runners must utilize roads, please note that this IS an OPEN course.  Please run with caution.  Runners may encounter mulch, grass, bridges, mud, sand, but primarily asphalt and rock.  Half Marathon Route 2016

5K route:  The 5K will take place on the Kennedy Park trail system and park grounds.  Runners may encounter rock, mulch, grass, bridges, mud and sand.  5k Route

Is there a course time limit?

Yes – runners must complete the half marathon course in 3.5 hours (~16 minute mile pace) and the 5k course in 1 hour (19.5 minute mile pace). The half marathon, 5k and Youth Runs all end at the same location, Kennedy Park. It is important that everyone honors the time limits.  In order to comply with city and county permits, streets crossing the route must be reopened to vehicular traffic after the time limits.

What will participants receive?

Participants for the half and 5k will receive a drifit shirt during packet pickup.  Half marathon finishers will also receive a medal, which will be distributed after crossing the finish line.

Awards:  TBD.  An informal award ceremony will take place at 11:30 near the finish line.

How do I register for the Hy-Vee Half & 5K?

Register early for reduced rates!  You can register for the Hy-Vee Half & 5K online through April 5. No paper or mailed entries are accepted. Register online at Active.com (Click below)


Registration past the March 13th will be accepted but we cannot guarantee you will receive a participate shirt or medal so we prefer all registration is done online in advance.

What is the deadline for registration?

Friday 11:59 pm April 15th is the last date and time for entering the Hy-Vee  Half & 5K online.  In person registration will be permitted on the day of the event at Kennedy Park near the finish line, however we cannot guarantee you a shirt (or medal).

How do I know if I am registered?

Runners will receive an e-mail upon completing of your on-line registration from Active.com.  Also your credit card will reflect your registration payment.

All entrants will receive an e-mail with final instructions.  If you are concerned you are not registered, please contact Amber Kastler.

Where does my registration fee go?

Your registration fees help pay for the necessary permits, police support, runners services, supplies and personnel to put on the race. The Hy-Vee  Half & 5K is nonprofit and all extra proceeds will be donated to JDRF.

Does the Hy-Vee  Half & 5K limit the number of runners in each race?

No, not at this time.  The more the merrier!

What do I do if I cannot participate once I have registered?

No refunds on entry fees or transferring of race numbers.  Runners not wearing the correct race number will be disqualified and asked to not enter the Hy-Vee  Half & 5K in the future.

What is the location and time of packet pickup?

  • Friday, April 28th 12-7 pm @ the Fort Dodge Hy-Vee: 115 S 29th Street Fort Dodge IA 50501
  • Saturday, April 29th (race day) 7:30-9:00a @ Kennedy Park near the finish line

How can I find my race number assignment prior to packet pickup?

All entrants assigned race number will be available by contacting Amber Kastler.  Bib numbers will not be assigned until the week of the race.

Can someone else pickup my packet?

Yes, make sure whomever picks up your packet has your permission to pick up your packet.  No packets will be mailed prior to or after the race.

Can I change my race distance? 

Yes.  This change can be done up to one week prior to the race.  Please contact Amber Kastler for assistance.  If you are entered in the 5K and wish to change to the half marathon you will need to pay the difference for the current price.  If you are entered in the half and wish to chance to the 5K, you will not receive a refund.

I’m injured and cannot run the Hy-Vee Half, will there be a refund? 

There are no refunds for the Hy-Vee Half & 5K, your entry fee will appropriately be used to maintain the race for next year or donated to JDRF.  The volunteer race committee is committed to keeping this race non-profit and a joy for runners to run every year.  While we understand that not all runners will be able to attend the race, your entry fee will be used effectively for future races.

Can I give my race number to another runner? 

No, do not transfer race numbers.  Any runner with the wrong race number will be disqualified and runners involved will be asked to not participant again at the Hy-Vee Half & 5K.  Changing race numbers can create unintended award and medical problems.  Additionally, bandits are not allowed in this race – permits, police fees, organizational costs, etc. are reserved only for those who registered.

Are bikes, rollers blades or baby joggers allowed on the course?

No early starts, bikes, baby joggers, dogs, roller blades are permitted for safety purposes. Headphones or electronic listening devices are permitted but discouraged for the safety of yourself and other runners.

What is the start time and location?

Half marathon starts at 9:00am at the Fort Dodge Aquatic Center, 1111 N 32nd St, Fort Dodge, IA 50501 on the trail just north of the park.  Parking is available at the aquatic center.  Shuttle service is available FROM Kennedy Park (finish line) TO the Aquatic Center (start line) before the race starts.

5 kilometer starts at 9:30 a.m. at Kennedy Park, 1415 Kenned Park, Fort Dodge, IA near the ENTRANCE of the park.

Kids runs start at 12 p.m. at Kennedy Park.

Where should I park on Race Day?

Half marathon and 5K parking is available at Kennedy Park, 1415 Nelson Ave, Fort Dodge, IA.

Will there be a shuttle for the half marathon runners?

Yes, there will be a shuttle service available for $1/person.  The shuttle will transport people TO the start line FROM Kennedy before the race only. Anyone can use the shuttle service.  Departure times FROM Kennedy TO half marathon start line is as follows:

  • 7:15a departure from Kennedy Park, arrive to start line at ~ 7:30a
  • 7:45a departure from Kennedy Park, arrive to start line at ~ 8:00a
  • 8:15a departure from Kennedy Park, arrive to start line at ~ 8:30a

Is there gear bag check-in for the half marathon?

Yes.  Clothing will be transported from the start to the finish and claimed near the finish area. Hy-Vee Half and 5K is not responsible for lost items. Please ensure your gear bag is easily identifiable by you with your name and contact information attached to bag.

Are there bathrooms near the half marathon and 5k start?

Yes.  Restrooms will be available.  There will also be Port-a-John’s available throughout the half marathon course.  Please look at the course map for locations.

Are there water stations available for the half marathon and 5K?

Yes.  There will be water stations available for the 5K and in addition to water stations there will be Powerade available for the half marathon.  Please check route map for locations.

How can I reunite with family, friends and other runners at the end of the half marathon?

The easiest way to find your family and friends after the race is to have a plan beforehand.

Half marathon runners after finishing will be directed to the finishers area to receive their finisher medal, water, sports drink and their clothing bags. Please refrain from lingering in this area as we do not want this area to become too congested or increase the risk of stolen belongings.

How will I receive my half marathon finishers medal?

You must finish in under 3 hours. Your medal will be presented to you after crossing the finish line.

How will I find my official time?

If I won a age division award, how do I get it?

Half marathon age division awards (first male and female) can be picked up at the Fort Dodge Hy-Vee store or will be mailed out to out of town participants.
